Infinitum #2

Greetings and a Happy Holiday season to everyone!

The holidays are fast approaching and the Infinitus team would like to have wish you all a Happy holiday season. To kick off the holidays let’s have some fun with two upcoming contests: The T-shirt Contest & The Homepage for the Holidays contest. You can win a Keynote Luncheon ticket or Infinitus Merchandise Gift Certificates! Details and rules are listed below, so let’s get that creativity flowing. If you’re hard pressed for an idea, check out our forums where you can talk to other Infinitus attendees and brainstorm some ideas.

In the spirit of the holidays, the Infinitus team is happy to announce that we will play host to the world wide premiere of the long anticipated parody film Harvey Putter and the Ridiculous Premise brought to you by Richardson Productions. The film follows Celebrity bad boy teen wizard Harvey Putter as he discovers through his headmaster at Snogwarts School of Witchcrap, Professor Mumblemore, that they are all merely fictitious characters in a best-selling children’s book. Harvey and his best friends—”poor witch trash” kid Rod Cheesely and the brainy Hernia Grunger–are tasked with collecting seven magical books known as “Hortexts” in order to escape the book world before the final chapter.

In addition to the film, the filmmakers will be hosting a panel with a Q&A session about the journey it took to make the film. You can learn more about the film and watch video clips from the film on their website at http://rpstudios.net/harveyputter/main.html. Stay tuned to www.infinitus2010.org for future details about the screening and panels. Remember, you have to be registered for Infinitus to gain access to all of our formal programming events. Click here to register.

Who wants to fight through Black Friday crowds at 5:00 a.m.? Shopping for your Infinitus registration and add-ons will be much easier. And to make it even sweeter, we’re offering a $10 gift certificate for use at the Infinitus merchandise table when you buy a regular registration on Black Friday (November 27, 2010). And just to stay in the holiday mood, from November 28-December 31, 2009, you will get a $5 gift certificate for use at the Infinitus merchandise table when you buy a regular registration, upgrade to Merlin’s Circle or add on a keynote luncheon.

Happy holidays from the Infinitus team!

Best Regards,

T-Shirt ContestCalling all artists! We’ve got an opportunity for fame and glory…at least among Infinitus attendees. We are looking for designs for the official Infinitus t-shirt. Our theme is “Imagine the Infinitus Possibilities” so let that inspire your creativity.A few guidelines:

  • No larger than 8.5 x 11″ in finished digital form, or at least 300 dpi
  • The artwork and text must be rated PG-13 or lower
  • If your submission is for a screen-printed design, please keep it to three or fewer colors (other than the color of the shirt), but if your submission is for a transfer, you can use as many colors as you wish.
  • Artwork should include the following elements: the word “Infinitus” and the event dates (July 15 – 18, 2010)
  • Any characters included in the art should not be identified by name. We strongly encourage using generic magical creatures and characters if you wish to incorporate people.
  • Do not use any of the official “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” artwork.

Submissions will be accepted until midnight (EST) December 30, 2009 at tshirtcontest@infinitus2010.org. Any questions can be forwarded to that address as well.

The artist who submits the winning design will win a ticket for the Keynote Lunch of his or her choice at Infinitus.

Formal ProgrammingHappy November from the Formal Programming Team! By using quotes from each of the books, we have put together some prompts/topic ideas to help get your imagination working. We are now accepting proposals on everything from literary criticism to fanfic writing, so start getting your proposals ready! Remember that the formal programming deadline for proposals is Jan 16, 2010  UPDATE:  NEW DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 28TH.. If you have any formal programming questions, feel free to email your questions to formalprogramming@infinitus2010.org.”Are you trying to earn some extra money, Weasley? Hoping to be gamekeeper yourself when you leave Hogwarts, I suppose–that hut of Hagrid’s must seem like a palace compared to what your family’s used to.” (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

  • Social elitism and/or the distinction of socioeconomic classes throughout the novels

“Now and then [Harry] caught a phrase like, ‘Fame’s a fickle friend, Harry,’ or ‘Celebrity is as celebrity does, remember that.’”

(Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)

  • Discussion of fame and recognition in the Wizarding World

“‘What we need,’ said Dumbledore slowly, and his light blue eyes moved from Harry to Hermione, ‘is more time.’”

(Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

  • Consideration of the significance of the use of time in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

“‘I mean, what do they do?’ asked Malfoy. ‘What is the point of them?’ Hagrid opened his mouth, apparently thinking hard; there was a few seconds’ pause, then he said roughly, ‘Tha’s next lesson, Malfoy.’”

(Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

  • Discussion on whether or not Hagrid would succeed as a teacher in today’s educational system

“However, Hermione, who was taking more subjects than either of them, had not only finished all her homework but was also finding time to knit more elf clothes. Harry had to admit that she was getting better; it was now almost always possible to distinguish between the hats and the socks.”

(Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

  • Workshops on fan crafting ideas (knitting, costuming, scrapbooking, etc.)

“‘I hear that you met the Minister of Magic over Christmas?’ ‘Yes,’ said Harry. ‘He’s not very happy with me.’ ‘No,’ sighed Dumbledore. ‘He is not very happy with me either. We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on.’” (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)

  • Analysis of the use of holidays as significant turning points in the novels

“He spotted Ginny two tables away; she was sitting with her head on her mother’s shoulder… and he spotted the three Malfoys, huddled together as though unsure whether or not they were supposed to be there…Everywhere he looked he saw families reunited…” (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

  • Compare/Contrast the Weasley family and Malfoy family internal dynamics

Those interested in staying at the Hard Rock Hotel can reserve a room with up to four people for $245 per night. These prices are good from July 11 through July 21 for Infinitus 2010 attendees, as well as their friends and family. Some suites can hold up to five people.

If you stay at the Royal Pacific, the Portofino Bay or the Hard Rock Hotel, you’ll be able to enjoy exclusive benefits that Universal provides only to on-site guests. Each room key-card is also your Express Pass; you’ll skip the regular lines at most rides and attractions. It’s the fastest way to ride by enjoy unparalleled access all day long, as often as you’d like, just by showing your hotel room key card at each express entrance. We expect that the Express Pass will work at the three rides in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Even if you just stay one night at one of the Universal hotels, you’ll enjoy your Express Pass on both of the days, as it works from the moment you you check in until the parks close on the day you check out.

We are also working to arrange showings of the Harry Potter films on one of the hotels’ in-room channels, so you can enjoy your favorite movie scenes at random times of day – or night!

Infinitus attendees who stay at any of the on-site hotels can also take the complimentary shuttle to nearby SeaWorld Orlando or Wet n’ Wild waterpark and charge purchases made in the Parks and at CityWalk to their rooms; priority seating is also available for hotel guests at certain Universal Studios Orlando restaurants.

And don’t forget, if you stay at any of the Universal Orlando hotels, you’ll help Infinitus meet our room block, and our commitment to the hotel. We are still working to provide a way for you to make your reservation online, so check back at www.Infinitus2010.org, our Facebook page at tinyurl.com/InfinitusFB, or our LiveJournal at infinitus2010.livejournal.com, or follow our Twitter at twitter.com/HPEF, for more announcements.

Volunteer spotlight – Robin Martin, Chair of Formal ProgrammingThe choice for this month’s spotlight was easy. With the Call for Proposals newly released, Robin has had quite a lot on her plate lately. Robin Martin is known in fandom as “Darcy Black” and has been a member of the fandom group Hogwarts Common Room since 2004. I was lucky enough to meet Robin at Lumos. She and her friends volunteered to work the door at the Harry & the Potters/The Draco Malfoys concert. I knew she had a brave soul right away. She’s been an enthusiastic volunteer ever since. She served on the vetting committee for Portus and was a life-saver on site. I was able to bring her onto the Infinitus team without too much begging. She’s done an amazing job so far. And now she has her biggest job ahead of her – reading all of the submissions that are pouring in. I’m so thankful to have someone so talented to trust with the heart of HPEF events – formal programming. – Jenn Clack
